This novel is set in a different Egypt than the one we know today, during a difficult and foggy period of which little has survived, as the priests of Amun struggle with the army of a kingdom that is descending into chaos after the death of their king, and we follow Thothi's search for his king's murderer. While we follow Thothi's search for his king's killer in a suspenseful plot, we learn about his friend Hor Htab the painter, the priestess Nekh Ti and the secrets she hides, and the eccentric Ka Sarkat and his struggle with the gods; they are different people brought together by fate, despite their different visions, principles and outlook on life, within a social drama framework, and philosophical insights about life and death, gods and humans, good and evil, and the myths of the ancients.
